Swallowing disorders (or dysphagia) can adversely affect the clinical status and quality of life of patients with this disorder. Dysphagia can lead to significant nutritional problems (i.e., weight loss, dehydration), quality-of-life issues (i.e., extreme discomfort during normal swallowing, painful or extreme effort required while eating, feelings of fullness in the neck, severe coughing during or after eating or drinking), and the risk of aspirational pneumonia. Proper imaging is essential in assessing and evaluating dysphagia, allowing us to develop patient-specific plans for managing dysphagia, improving airway protection, ensuring proper nutrition and adequate hydration, preventing aspiration pneumonia, and improving quality of life.
